Lyrics

“IN THE MIDDLE”
By Norman Blain ©2025

Many people try to handle
The stress of getting by
To fit into this culture
For the American pie
In the race to get ahead
And the acquirement of things
To be good little consumers
For corporate greed
And the rich keep getting richer
The poor keep getting poor
But there’s lots of jobs for everyone
Thanks to the trickle down you hear
The top gets crazy money
Hundreds of times the bottom man
You would think they’d pay a living wage in this world’s richest land

Chorus:
So we’re caught in the middle
For the American pie
It’s not for a little
Our life’s on the line

Now Stu works for a business
And it's bringing in the dough
And he gets two weeks vacation and some holidays ya know
And the business keeps expanding
The hours get insane
But his pay goes up so little that his life remains the same
In six years he’s retiring
But the bills make it hard to save
He just hopes he keeps his health up
While he’s working towards that day

Chorus:
And so he’s caught in the middle
For the American pie
It’s not for a little
His life’s on the line

Now a few will rise to the top
While the many hold them up!
It’s never been any different
To be rich it takes a lot!

If you look back on history
Many empires did fall
As we use up our resources
We’re just heading for the wall
If you ask the politician
Things are better than before
But the rich are getting richer
And many more are getting poor

We can’t take it with us
In the end we’ll all be gone
We have a chance to make a difference
Will we turn this thing around?

Chorus:
While were caught in the middle
For the American pie
It’s not for a little
Our life’s on the line
